A researcher from the UCAM receives the prize for the best thesis in political communication (08/12/2017)

Juan Antonio Marín Albaladejo, who has recently been awarded a PhD by the UCAM, has received the Prize awarded by the Political Communication Association (ACOP) for the best doctoral thesis in political communication, for his study "The mediatic representation of the political corruption scandal in Spain (2009 - 2014) from the Theory of the frame (Framing) ".

The objective of the research was to analyze the journalistic story in Spain, through the cases "Gürtel-Bárcenas", "ERE de Andalucía" and "Nóos", to identify the frames that predominate in the coverage of this information and explore how they influence certain factors in the treatment of the media.

The award of the ACOP Award for the best doctoral thesis in political communication aims to promote and recognize academic excellence in this field as a scientific discipline, oriented to applications in professional practice.

In this sense, the results of this doctoral thesis show how the media construct the narrative of corruption scandals through the use of a variety of narrative or cultural frameworks that are activated through certain symbolic mechanisms, such as metaphors, archetypes or values ​​present in journalistic content.

The researcher has used a methodology based on the integration of different theoretical approaches to the framing process and the triangulation of several types of quantitative and qualitative techniques applied in different phases.

The first one has an exploratory purpose and consists of the qualitative analysis of the editorials published in the newspapers El País, El Mundo and ABC about the three selected cases and in the realization of a series of interviews with journalists who have covered the scandals of Political corruption object of study.

In the next phase, the results of the content analysis of covers have shown that the ideological inclination of the media strongly conditions the journalistic treatment of corruption cases.

Luis Arroyo, member of the evaluation board and former president of ACOP, stated that "it was a work that was very coherently evaluated by all the members of the jury, first, because it is a very interesting research due to its methodological depth, with the use of a multiple method, second, because it is a work on framing, which is so topical, with a very strong quality and about a subject as relevant in Spain as corruption. "
