Change we propose to use plant residues from the cleaning of parks and gardens in the restoration of the most degraded soils (21/10/2017)

Let's change Murcia will propose to Plenary next Thursday that the vegetal residues derived from the cleaning of channels, ditches, azarbes, parks and gardens are used as green manure to improve soil conditions in the most degraded basins of the municipality, especially in the area of north of the Segura river valley.

For this, the municipal formation will propose the creation of a protocol managed by the City and the General Directorate of Natural Environment of the Region, with the possibility of reaching agreements with private owners and private entities that own land located in the most arid areas of Murcia.

In addition, the initiative, developed by Huerta and the City Model, will urge the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) to use the vegetable waste from cleaning the river banks in the same direction, and the Junta de Hacendados to transfer them to the service of Parks and Gardens of the Consistory so that they can be used, likewise, in the restoration of floors.

The councilor who will defend the motion, Sergio Ramos, explained that the soils of the municipality are characterized by being semi-arid, that is, poor in carbon due to the sparse vegetation and low plant production due to the scarce rainfall and the natural characteristics of the ground.

Thus, "using plant residues in the most degraded soils would result in a progressive reduction of flood flows and would improve the ecosystem and biodiversity, as well as contributing to carbon and plant growth in the long term", helping to mitigate climate change.
