The UMU is committed to transparency and regeneration (20/10/2017)

The rector of the University of Murcia (UMU), José Orihuela, and the Vice-rector of Social Responsibility, Transparency and Equality, María del Carmen López Aniorte, today made a decisive commitment of this institution for transparency and regeneration and for some selective processes in the hiring of personnel that are governed by the principles of equality, merit and capacity.

This philosophy has been exposed by both academic authorities on the occasion of the II Conference Challenges for a Transparent Society, which are held in the Hemicycle of the faculty of Letters on the campus of La Merced.

In her presentation, Professor López Aniorte commented that in recent times there has been much progress in transparency, but what is done is insufficient to end the scourge of corruption.

He also emphasized that UMU's firm commitment to these values began in its day with the creation of the Transparency Portal and the Vice-Rectorate that he directs, among other actions.

He also referred in his report to the past irregular actions detected in the institution, evidenced even with judicial sentences that have condemned the UMU and with actions of the Labor Inspectorate.

These legal and labor irregularities have also led to the UMU having to pay last July 400,000 euros to the General Treasury of Social Security for not having paid for students who rendered their services to the institution without being discharged.

He also commented that the most serious problems he has detected have already been solved by the current rectoral team, and that now it is a question of taking the appropriate measures so that they do not happen again.

On the other hand, he said that the rectoral team is already working on training and raising awareness of PAS and IDP on these issues to get managers to turn to implement that philosophy, and recalled that the Governing Council of the UMU already approved , in July 2016, instructions for the correct execution of external contracted services.

The opening ceremony of the Conference was closed by the rector, José Orihuela, who insisted on what had been advanced by the vice rector, adding that since their arrival they have worked for the regeneration of this teaching institution, using transparency and good government.

I presented myself for the purpose of regeneration, he said, to add that at that time the university community was losing its confidence in it.

He has also stated that the reality they encountered was worse than they thought.

He advanced that work in the implementation of a single data office, so that information flows efficiently and can banish the corrupter obscurantism of who controls it.

He also said that to achieve greater transparency and fight corruption is not enough just to apply the law, but other actions are needed, to add that in that line of improvement is the creation of the aforementioned Vice-rectorate and the approval of the Code of Ethics .

The opening session was also attended by the president of the Transparency Council of the Region of Murcia, José Molina, who stressed that progress is being made in this field, but there is still a long way to go.

He also said that the exercise of transparency should be viewed as normal, without arousing the suspicions and oppositions that still occur.

In that sense, he highlighted the activity that the UMU develops and the collaboration it receives from it in its management.
