The Government Board approved this morning the collaboration agreement with the University of Murcia for the development of the project 'Murcia Diabetes Prevent' which will last for two years.

In this project a pilot intervention of research and action in the population of the municipality will be carried out applying a genetic test of DM2 and a mobile application with digital pedometer for the preventive approach of this disease.

The objective of the agreement is to establish a framework of collaboration and cooperation between the City of Murcia, through the Municipal Health Services, and the University of Murcia, Nutrition and Bromatology Research Group for the development of the project "Murcia diabetes prevent" , Which will consist of the design, implementation and evaluation of this pilot research / action project for the prevention of type 2 diabetes and obesity in adults and children, using a genetic risk test and a mobile application to support the change of habits Of food and physical activity.

In this way, innovative methods of genomic medicine will be applied that are able to identify certain elements that predispose to DM2, which can be key to establishing community-based preventive programs based on the promotion of healthy lifestyles, since a healthy diet, An active life and avoid obesity are key pillars to achieve a slowdown of this disease.

Participation in this project is in line with the work developed by the Municipal Health Services, which include among its strategic lines interventions for the prevention of chronic diseases through the promotion of food health and physical activity.

This work is part of the Strategy for Health Promotion and Prevention in the National Health System to which the City Council has adhered since 2016 and was recognized with the NAOS National Strategy Award in 2012.

Diabetes is a disease with serious implications for health and quality of life, with comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, neuropathy, etc.

And is currently the most common cause of adult blindness, amputation, and renal failure.

43% do not know their disease

Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, recalled that in Spain, 7% of the population over 15 years of age has type 2 diabetes, reaching 8.5% in Murcia.

Prevalence after 65 years increases to 19% and the trend is increasing every year.

In addition, it is estimated that 43% of those affected are unaware of their situation.

The epidemic of obesity and diabetes are closely related.

In Murcia, overweight in children affects 32% of children aged 2-14 years (21% overweight and 11% obesity) and 60% of adults, while 66% do not reach the recommendation Minimum of physical activity.

"More than self-evident facts, to confirm the convenience of developing this agreement with the University of Murcia for research and action on this disease," concluded Coello.
