Murcia puts forward its five-year compliance in the fight against climate change reaching 24.5% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2015 (22/02/2017)

The calculation of the emission inventory of the municipality is one of the commitments acquired in the adhesion to the Covenant of Mayors of the European Union, in which Murcia assumed the obligation to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020. The energy consumption shows An increase in natural gas use of 41.5%, a decrease in electricity and fossil fuels of around 30% and, above all, an increase in renewable energy by 273%.

The success factors that have contributed to this reduction in emissions in Murcia are, among others, the construction of the tram, the increase of 5% in the use of the bicycle and the extension of the natural gas network

The City of Murcia, through the Department of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta, directed by Antonio Navarro Corchón, has just submitted to Europe the results obtained after the latest CO2 Emissions Inventory, showing the reduction by 24.5 % Of these gases in the municipality of Murcia compared to those issued in 2007, from 5.06 that year to 3.68 in 2015. This result is an advance in five years within the deadline established for the fulfillment of the commitment, According to which that percentage would be reduced by 20% in 2020.

The calculation of the emission inventory of the municipality is one of the obligations assumed by the Consistory after its adhesion to the Covenant of Mayors of the European Union in 2008. The objective is to achieve this reduction through three fundamental pillars: the improvement of energy efficiency , The use of renewable energy sources and awareness and training.

The result is a reduction in emissions of 524,583 tCO2 / year, since in 2015 was quantified 1,616,694.38 tCO2 - which translates into per capita emissions of 3.68 tCO2 / hab -, compared to 2,141,277 tCO2 - 5.06 tCO2 / hab- in 2007.

The success factors that have contributed to this reduction in emissions in Murcia are:

- The construction of the tram

- The 5% increase in bicycle use in the modal split, especially for initiatives such as the public rental system and built infrastructure

- The use of more efficient vehicles by the private and commercial sector

- The extension of the natural gas network, which has increased its consumption by 41.5%, to the detriment of less efficient applications

- The increase of 27.3% of the energy produced locally by means of renewable energy sources, especially photovoltaic

- Reduction of 36.7% in electricity consumption in public lighting, through energy efficiency actions

If the measures promoted by the City Council had not been implemented, forecasts indicate that gas emissions would have remained practically the same, with an increase of 1.86%;

With the recommendations of the Covenant of Mayors the decrease would have reached 20%.

The weight of transport

The holder of the Environment has explained that "the sector that reduces its emissions the most is the tertiary sector, with 37.55%;

Followed by municipal facilities with 37.1%;

Public lighting, with a 36.7% decrease;

The transport sector, with 26.2%;

And residential with a reduction of 20.3%, indicating that it still has a lot of energy saving capacity. "

In absolute terms, transport is the sector that has the greatest weight on pollution levels, and its decrease has been from 869,893 in 2007 to 642,168.

In terms of emissions, Navarro Corchón said, "it is the transport sector that has the most weight in Murcia and is responsible for 40% of total CO2 emissions," also said that "the use of diesel has been reduced in 29%, while gasoline consumption has been reduced by 33.6% ".

The final energy consumption between the different sources shows an increase in the use of natural gas of 41.5%, a decrease in the use of electricity and fossil fuels of around 30% and, above all, an increase in the use of Renewable energy by 273%.

Regarding consumption, renewables have gone from 0.3% to 5% today, while the sector of petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, C, propane, butane) has the greatest weight with 58%.

Sustainable mobility

In the field of sustainable mobility, Murcia has increased the use of the bicycle as a means of habitual transport in 5%.

This development has been due, among other factors, to initiatives promoted by the City, such as the MUyBICI public bicycle rental system, the execution of closed-off car parks, fork-lift vehicles, the construction of 158 km of bike lanes and Moon Bike routes , among other.

In addition, the councilman of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta has pointed out "the increase in the use of public transport, the construction of line 1 of the tram and the increasing use of cleaner fuels such as compressed natural gas and biofuels" .

In the actions on energy efficiency, the highlight was the reduction of electricity consumption in public lighting by 36.7%, improvements in lighting installations, air conditioning and awareness campaigns for a rational use of energy, obtaining a reduction of 33% Of consumption in municipal buildings since 2007.

Navarro Corchón has valued that "the figures of reduction of emissions in the municipality must serve us of the spirit and motivation to continue making efforts in the same line".

Future initiatives

The next initiatives that the Department of Urban Planning, Environment and Huerta wants to promote are the promotion of self-consumption facilities with photovoltaic solar energy, the elaboration of the Local Electric Vehicle Strategy, energy saving campaigns in the residential sector, increased use of The bicycle with the execution of 27.6 km of new bike lanes, replacement of the consumption of petroleum derivatives - whether fuel or C diesel for heating - by other clean or less polluting sources, among others.

Thus, the City of Murcia "will continue to work to reduce CO2 emissions in our municipality to meet the next goal of reducing emissions by 40% in 2030, a commitment acquired after our accession to the Covenant of Mayors for Climate And Energy in 2016, "concluded the holder of the Environment.
