Murcia will have a Citizen Lab pioneer in Spain to involve residents in improving waste collection service (26/10/2016)

José Ballesta and Ignacio Gaston signed the protocol of actions for the implementation and management of the Citizen Lab Waste Collection in Murcia.

"The goal is to have the direct contribution of Murcia, to implement actions that allow us to increase recycling levels through greater social involvement," said the mayor.

The Citizen Lab allow you to conduct valuable research that will shed light on the sociological and domestic habits of Murcian families.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the CEO of Ferrovial Servicios in Spain, Ignacio Gaston, signed the protocol of actions this morning for the implementation and management of the 'Laboratorio Ciudadano Waste Collection in Murcia, a program of pioneering innovation in Spain, which represents an opportunity for residents of the municipality to participate and be involved in the design and improvement of urban services.

"The goal is to have the direct participation of the users of this public service to implement procedures that allow us to increase the levels of recycling through greater social involvement, making Murcia a more sustainable city," said the mayor, who he added that "this initiative we want to position our city as a benchmark in urban innovation."

The Citizen Lab study the management of household waste through three methods: individual interviews validation which have already been done-the Center for Experimentation and unique experiments, "an investigation that will provide a valuable learning sociological and management recycling of urban waste, "said José Ballesta.

It will also contribute to greater social awareness of the environment and increased sustainability, since the conclusions drawn from the project will serve to improve services related to waste management in Murcia.

It is estimated that several hundred people participate in the Citizen Lab, mainly in experiments Experimentation Center, where dynamics and learning activities designed to listen and understand citizens will develop.

To do this, the program needs a representative sample of Murcia society and invites residents of neighborhoods and districts, universities and colleges, neighborhood councils, youth centers, Seniors and Women, families, different organizations conduct tests and experiments Experimentation Center.

The investigation, the results will be analyzed and applied to identify areas for improvement in waste collection services, and become a benefit for the residents of Murcia.

Soon, both social networks Murcia City Council and Sustainable City will be informed of how they can target citizens interested in participating in experiments Experimentation Center to be located in the Centro Cultural García Alix.

Increase the tonnage of waste collected

Murcia recorded an increase in the number of tons of waste collected due to the economic recovery, increases in household consumption last year.

In addition, awareness campaigns have been carried out have had a positive impact on recycling, achieving a 3% more tons of selective waste (glass, cans and paper) collected in 2015, compared to 2014, from 16,111 million 16,568 million.

Generally, our waste is composed of 45% organic matter, 22% paper and cardboard, 10% plastic, glass 7%, 4% metal, brik 2% and 10% of other waste.

With the recycling of 2 tons of used plastic saves 1 ton of crude oil, lots of water, and also manage to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and waste generated in the process.

By recycling a plastic bottle we save the energy needed to power a light bulb for 6 hours.

For every tonne of cartons recycled transformed into Tectan we save 1,500 kg of wood, 100,000 liters of water and 221 kg of oil.

Recycling 1 ton of newspaper saves up to 4,000 Kwh of electricity, enough to supply a 3 bedroom house for an entire year.

7,000 newspapers or one ton of paper equivalent to 3 m3 of wood, ie, 13 medium-sized trees.
