National recognition of Murcia for its leadership in energy efficiency and innovation (12/12/2019)

The mayor of Murcia has received this morning, at the Secretary of State for Digital Advancement, the Best Local Administration Manager award of the 'EnerTIC Awards 2019'.

In addition, the City of Murcia has also been a finalist in the category of Electronic Government, for its project 'Life Heatland', among 130 proposals.

The objective of this initiative is to reduce the ambient temperature of Murcia through the use of high reflectance pavements - cold asphalt - that absorb the sun's heat to a lesser extent compared to conventional ones.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé, attended the VII edition of the Awards for innovation and technology for energy efficiency 'EnerTIC Awards 2019', held at the Secretary of State for the Advance Digital, in Madrid, where he was recognized with the award for Best Director of the local Administration.

“The cities of the 21st century differ not so much by their size, nor demography, nor urban development, but by being cities with projects or without projects.

In Murcia we have a project that has the application of new technologies as one of its pillars, understanding that these are not an end in itself, but a means to improve the quality of life of Murcia, to break all kinds of social barriers , cultural and economic through the application of new technologies, â€said the mayor of Murcia.

During his speech, upon receiving the award as Best Local Administration Manager, José Ballesta added that “this distinction is also deserved by the councilors, the Administration professionals who work in our City Project, as well as the companies that collaborate with the Murcia City Council â€.

This award recognizes the effort of the Murcia Consistory for the implementation of sustainable urban policies that improve the quality of life, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in the path of the 2030 Urban Agenda.

During the month of September 2019, the Technical Committee of the EnerTIC platform selected among all the directors proposed to three finalists in each of the sectors, as they are considered referents in this area;

the managers most committed to energy efficiency and sustainability.

In addition to the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, those selected were the mayor of Gijón, Ana González, and the mayor of Benidorm, Antonio Pérez.

The three councilors were proposed by those associated with the Platform or by the organizations that are part of the Institutional Network of EnerTIC.

Specifically, the objective of these awards is to identify, recognize and disseminate the involvement of entities in the use of Information and Communication Technologies for the improvement of energy efficiency and sustainability are the objectives of these Awards.

In this way, the celebration of these 'EnerTIC Awards 2019' allows the dissemination of success stories and good practices, which serve as a reference to advance and raise awareness about the opportunities offered by the digitalization of cities, industries, data centers, etc.

The event was attended by the director of the EnerTIC platform, Óscar Azorín, the general director of Telecommunications and Information Technologies of the Ministry of Economy and Business, Roberto Sánchez, the Dean of the Official College of Industrial Engineers of Madrid (COIIM), César Franco, the Dean-President of the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers (COIT), Marta Balenciaga, and the founder of the EnerTIC platform, Francisco Verderas.

Murcia, finalist among 130 projects in the open government category

In addition to this distinction, Murcia was also chosen as a finalist in the category of 'eGovernment' - electronic government -, for its project 'Life Heatland', among 130 initiatives that were submitted to this modality of the VII edition of these awards.

'Life Heatland' is an initiative whose objective is to reduce the ambient temperature of Murcia through the use of high reflectance pavements - cold asphalt, cool pavement, adapting urban spaces through the use of new pavements with less energy storage solar than conventional ones, which absorb the sun's heat to a lesser extent compared to conventional ones.

In this way, both the surface temperature of the soil and the environment will be reduced, contributing to a better quality of life and well-being of people, as well as mitigating the effects of climate change.

The organization has valued this initiative for its degree of applied innovation, the level of use of information and communication technologies, as well as for its impact on reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

The purpose of this project is to achieve a decrease in the air temperature of 1.5ºC and the surface pavement of 10ºC, in addition to an energy saving of 7% for cooling devices and 5% for public lighting.

In Murcia, it is planned to implement the new pavement in Pío Baroja street, in an area of ​​24,000 square meters.

Asphalt tests are currently being carried out in the La Paz neighborhood, framed by the ADN Urbano initiative, with the aim of verifying the suitability of the asphalt.

The City Council of Murcia develops this initiative together with the Business Association of Research Technology Center of the Construction of the Region of Murcia (CTCON), the construction company CHM Works and Infrastructures, the Regional Federation of Construction Entrepreneurs of Murcia (FRECOM) and Cluster of the Construction sector of Slovenia.

'Life Heatland' has also involved the installation of four measuring towers, equipped with temperature and humidity sensors, wind speed, solar radiation, ozone meter, light intensity and sound level.

The data obtained will be sent via 3G to a server for consultation.

EnerTIC, a platform for companies and institutions

Improving energy efficiency is one of the objectives of EnerTIC, a platform that contributes to the development of the transformation potential of Information and Communication Technologies in the field of energy efficiency in Spain, with the support of Associated Companies and public institutions , in favor of a more competitive and sustainable economy.

Information and Communications Technologies, as they have already been shown in other sectors and highlights the main international organizations (OECD, EU, etc.) have enormous transformation potential and their application in the field of energy allows to improve energy efficiency considerably .

Murcia, smart city

The City of Murcia is working on the implementation of the Smart City Strategic Plan, through the MiMurcia project.

It is a smart city model, based on participation, citizen care, open government, sustainable mobility and urban quality, and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals.

The work is focused on developing City Intelligence solutions, relying on the local ecosystem and the MIOS (MiMurcia Open Innovation Smart City) innovation laboratory, a living laboratory with which sensors are deployed in the city, which provide data and allow Develop new ideas and concepts.

All this will be managed from CEUS (Single Monitoring Center), the nerve center of the smart city that will be located in the Abenarabi building in Murcia and will have a control room and crisis room, from which you can view the municipality as a whole in emergency situations.

In addition, another of the great purposes of the project promoted by the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization, José Guillén, is to create synergies with local innovative companies.

Not only is it an institutional project, but it will also lead to the development of an important technological area in the municipality.

As proof of this, the City of Murcia has recently received the Future Telecommunications Award for Innovation, for the 'Smart City MiMurcia' project, awarded by the Official College and the Association of Graduates and Technical Telecommunications Engineers, recognizing the model of intelligent city of the Murcian Consistory.

Murcia Smart Mobility

Through the strategic plan 'Murcia Smart Mobility', the municipal government is also committed to sustainable mobility, promoting the use of electric vehicles, public transport and the bicycle as a healthy vehicle, as well as promoting universal accessibility.

This project encompasses different local initiatives, such as the 2019-2023 Metropolitan Mobility Plan of Murcia, which will involve the implementation of the first Transportation Plan designed to suit the municipality.
