The UMU presents the minimum measures that universities should meet to host Erasmus students with disabilities (11/10/2019)

The University of Murcia presented on Friday the 'Standard of support measures for Erasmus + students with special needs', the result of the Erasmus + MobiaAbility project coordinated by the UMU professor Miguel Ángel Pérez.

The project, which has recently ended after three years of work, aimed to facilitate the international mobility of university students with disabilities or learning difficulties through the Erasmus + program.

This event, which has taken place in the Rector Soler building, is also part of the #ErasmusDays, organized by the European Commission to disseminate the Erasmus + program and are being held from October 10 to 12.

After three years of study and research, the MobiAbility project has finalized the standard of support measures for university students with disabilities and / or learning difficulties participating in Erasmus + mobility programs.

It is a list of 213 standards or minimum measures that every university should guarantee to students with mobility with special needs;

to which 29 recommendations are added to optimize the attention to this group.

Of these measures, 197 refer directly to very specific and specific aspects such as access and permanence in the university, to physical, informative and technological accessibility, to the teaching-learning process and evaluation, to the promotion of participation in University life already helps and scholarships.

The remaining 45 measures refer to the internal processes of management and evaluation of the programs of attention to the collective.

This standard of measures has been developed based on the results of three previous studies carried out by the team of researchers and professionals of the MobiAbility Project.

In a first phase, a legal analysis of the national legislation of 21 European countries in the field of higher education and disability was carried out, which concluded with some guidelines on the aspects that receive more or less regulation.

Subsequently, an empirical study was carried out by means of a survey of those responsible for European universities on the measures of attention to diversity that they are currently implementing, which provided data on the level of application of each support measure in the field of the European university.

Finally, an evaluation was carried out by an international panel of experts, which concluded what support measures should be complied with and what the recommendations would be.

The standard of support measures has been published on the MobiAbility project website in English and Spanish.

During the next months a promotion of the same will be carried out with the objective that the universities, associations of people with disabilities, people responsible for the Erasmus + Program and policy makers know it and assume it as a reference to improve in this area.

It must be remembered that the MobiAbility project arose due to the need to respond to the low international mobility rate of university students with special needs.

For this, it was proposed that a standard of measures, that is, guaranteed supports and adaptations in any university, would reduce the uncertainty that this group still perceives in the face of the adventure of studying abroad and would help break down barriers in universities.

The consortium of entities of the MobiAbility project is composed of the University of Murcia (as coordinator), ONCE Foundation, CERMI-Region of Murcia, Universia Foundation, Polytechnic University of Lublin (Poland), Alexandru Ioan Cuza University (Romania) and Masaryk University (Republic Czech).

The project has been funded by the Spanish Service for the Internationalization of Education (SEPIE) with funds from the Erasmus + Program of the European Union.

On the other hand, in the coming weeks the second result of the project will be presented: a multilingual web platform designed to facilitate the search and encounter of the foreign university that best suits their needs to students with special needs.

In addition, the platform will house a series of online tools to facilitate particular agreements between the student, the home university and the host university in terms of attention to diversity.

On the project website, www.um.es/mobiability you can find detailed information regarding the partners, the objectives of the project, studies and results obtained and activities carried out.
