Work is progressing on the last stretch of Alfonso X, which will reduce traffic by 95% (12/08/2019)

Operators have already compacted the pedestrian surface and have proceeded to concreting it in the section of Levante in Phase II, the last one to be executed.

The total opening of the avenue will arrive in autumn.

The next step "is the paving of this environment with which Murcia will gain 15,000m2 of pedestrian area, and that will begin the first week of September," said José Ballesta.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, along with the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, visited this morning the works of the last section of the Alfonso X El Sabio pedestrian avenue, which face its final stretch and will reduce 95% of the traffic with respect to the one that circulated before the work.

Operators have already compacted the pedestrian surface and have proceeded to concreting it in the section of Levante in Phase II, the last one to be executed.

The next step "is the paving of this environment with which Murcia will gain 15,000m2 of healthy surface, and that will begin the first week of September," said José Ballesta.

"The pace of work is progressing at full capacity so this fall we will complete and put into service this new boulevard in the heart of the city, which constitutes a social and family meeting point, patrimony of all Murcia," he said the mayor during his visit to the works.

Operators have already completed the installation of street lighting, have demolished the old sidewalks and are building rain gutters.

When the paving is completed, 85 planters will be installed, new low-consumption LED luminaires, litter bins, benches and underground containers.

The crossing of Jaime I will be maintained for motor vehicles.

This new avenue is the first of the municipality of Murcia, both its project and the companies that carry out the works, materials, furniture and vegetation.

The City Council put into service this past July the 3,400 m2 corresponding to the west axis of Phase II, which included the installation of 29 lampposts, 37 orange trees and 10 paper mills.

'Clean Air'

The pedestrianization of healthy axes in urban environments is one of the measures included in the municipal strategy 'Clean Air', aimed at reducing pollution and effects of climate change through various fronts of action such as the commitment to clean means in the services of public transport and road cleaning, the Electric Vehicle and Bicycle Strategy, free alternative services to agricultural burns and the promotion of our green areas, such as the 2030 Forest Plan.

Recovery of spaces for Murcia

“The recovery of public spaces for Murcia is the constant that builds our City Model.

Returning previously closed spaces, opening them for urban and social recovery, and creating new meeting points for people is the purpose of strategic projects such as Murcia Río II, the Vía Verde II, San Esteban, the Old Jail or the Artillery Barracks, to which we must add the Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue, â€said José Ballesta.

The mayor said that “these projects, together with the construction of new sidewalks in neighborhoods and districts and the 37 km of new bike lanes that are being enabled in the municipality, mean the recovery of 145,000 m2 for Murcia, improving the quality of life of people".

Large pedestrian axis from the river to La Circular

Specifically, this Phase II covers an area of 8,217 m2 and 200 m in length, and involves the complete renovation of the pavement and the creation of a modern and uniform urban treatment space, completing the most important pedestrian itinerary in the city;

a reference axis that runs from the river and La Glorieta, Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X to La Circular;

covering an area of 50,000 m2 (equivalent to 5 soccer fields).

This work, promoted by the Department of Infrastructure, Works and Public Services, has a budget of 2 million euros and an execution period of 8 months (started on March 6).

The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, within the framework of the 2014-2020 Sustainable Growth Operational Program, with the DUSI Murcia IT Strategy: Innovation + Tradition.
