The margins of'Murcia Río' are full of life with 6,000 shrubs and more than 200 new trees (11/06/2019)

The work to improve both motes will end in July, opening a space of 18,000 m2, along the urban stretch of the Segura channel.

The acting mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Modernization of the Administration and Urban Development in functions, José Guillén, visited this morning the revegetation and improvement works of the left and right banks of the river as it passes through the city, within the 'Murcia River' project.

The works of improvement of both margins of the river, that is predicted that finalize this month of July, are supposing the plantation 6,000 bushy plants and more than 200 native trees, which will allow to fill of life a space of 18,000 m2, establishing zones of stroll along the urban stretch of the Segura channel, as it passes through the heart of the city.

"Murcia takes a new perspective from these naturalized walks that accompany the flow of the river, with areas of shade and native nature;

a lung in which you can feel the colors and aromas of our land, with trees such as elms and white poplars, and shrubs of the garden such as myrtle, lavender or mint, "said José Ballesta, who indicated that" the project it also means the rehabilitation of all the stairs that give access to the channel, from the Manterola Pasarela to the Fica ".

"Murcia Río is today a reality, with the new fluvial parks of the Cuatro Piedras and La Alameda, the river walk that will open to all Murcia in a few days and the revegetation of the margins of the river that we are undertaking at this time" , said José Ballesta, who indicated that "we are already working on Phase II of Murcia River, which will extend to 14 districts creating large metropolitan parks and family zones along the 27 km of riverbed."

Removing rods and improving the bike path

On the right side, a recreational path has been adapted, for the first time, with shadow areas.

Similarly, trees are being planted on the left bank next to the channel wall in order to provide shadow areas for the existing bike path and the pedestrian promenade.

Interspersed with the trees, riverside bushes of different species and sizes have been planted on both banks.

The partial removal of areas of hurricane and the planting of other substitute bushes have also been carried out.

All the vegetal species proposed are autochthonous and own of Ribera del Segura river.

In the next few days the special paving of the existing bike path on the left bank will be carried out, which will be completely naturalized with the surroundings.

The action also provides for special concrete paving in the descent of each staircase so that pedestrians who cross the bike lane to access the pedestrian promenade can do so safely.

European financing

The works involved an overall investment of 1,487,000 euros and have been co-financed by 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Strategy.

Murcia River II

Murcia River II will structure Murcia and its districts, from La Contraparada to its exit from the municipality by Alquerías, thus encompassing 27 km of riverbed and close to 1 million m2, on a surface that will have more than 2,000 trees and 10,500 riverbank shrubs.

There will be two metropolitan parks next to Barriomar and La Fica, and new footbridges and bridges will facilitate the connection of the neighbors on both sides of the river.

The recovery of the meanders will open new green spaces and family areas for residents of the districts of La Ñora, Puebla de Soto, La Raya, Rincón de Beniscornia and Rincón de Seca, in the west;

as well as for those around Torreagüera, Llano de Brujas, Santa Cruz, El Raal, Alquerías and Los Ramos, in the east.

A large header park in La Contraparada, between the districts of Javalí Nuevo and Javalí Viejo, will open as an interactive museum of the river and the Huerta, uniting tradition and vanguard.
