Piraguas and dragon boats will take the Segura this weekend in the IV Regatta Ciudad de Murcia (15/02/2019)

Some 700 athletes from all over Spain will take to the Segura waters, with a participation that has increased by around 40%.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, Antonio Gil, the general director of the newspaper La Verdad, Antonio González, the vice-chancellor of Communication of the UMU, Javier Martínez, and the director of the Regatta, José Juan de León, presented today the IV Regatta Ciudad de Murcia, a massive sporting event in which more than 700 athletes will meet in Segura waters this Saturday and Sunday, February 16 and 17.

The event was attended by the Commissioner of the National Police of Murcia, Antonio Gil, and the general director of Sports of the Community, Alonso Gómez.

"They had to spend 35 years to see again the water sports in the Segura.

This weekend we celebrate the fourth edition of this sporting event that has been consolidated as a first level sporting event that has the same category as the Sella descent, included in the calendar of the Royal Spanish Canoe Federation with the category of ' special interest '", explained José Ballesta, who added that" participation this year has increased by 40% compared to 2018. "A few years ago it would have seemed unthinkable to contemplate canoeists in the river.

Today we see them practically every day cruising in the heart of the city, uploaded to their K1 and C1.

Canoeing joins other activities that welcome the environment of 'Murcia River' as running, cycling, fishing, sailing or even the water sky, "said the mayor.

In addition, this sporting event, organized by the newspaper La Verdad, the City of Murcia and the Murcia River Club, will have a positive economic impact on the Murcia hospitality and catering sector, since "hundreds of athletes will spend the night in the city with reason for the test and the hotels are about to hang the poster squarely, "said the mayor.

The dragon boats will sail the Segura

One of the most spectacular tests is undoubtedly the one starring the dragon boats.

The test, which will take place on Saturday throughout the morning, can be seen in the urban section of the river as it passes through the center of the city.

There will be 54 teams with 11 people on board in each one.

Novelty 2019: I Relay Regatta

This year, for the first time, a relay event has been added, in which 10 K1 teams will participate, whose members will cover 1,000m each (a total of 3,000m).

The Olympic gold of the National Police

Among the 700 athletes from all over Spain who will be thrown into the waters of the Segura this weekend include 14 professionals from the National Police who have an outstanding national and international sports record, such as Carlos Pérez Rial, known as 'Perucho', four times World Champion and Olympic Champion in Beijing 2008, a title he won alongside policeman Saúl Craviotto, a four-time Olympic medalist.

Competition tests:

1. I Regatta of the II League of Dragon Boats.

Saturday, from 09.30 to 14.00.

2 - 1st Relay Race.

Saturday, at 5:00 p.m.

3 - IV Kayak-Canoe Race (K1-C1).

Sunday, 9.30.

4 - VII Regatta Four (K4.C4).

Sunday, at 1:00 p.m.

The schedule will be on Saturday from 09:30 to 17:30 and Sunday from 09:30 to 14:30.

The competition takes place in the urban Segura river section.

The route will be made in a long distance between buoys of 833 meters.

For the K1 and C1, the start will be in the vicinity of the Murcia Parque Sports Center, where the goal will also be located, as well as the delivery of trophies during and at the end of the competition.

In K1 and C1, the regatta will include all categories from fry to veterans including both, men, women and Paralympic category.

5 kilometers (1600m Alevín, 3200m Infantile, for the categories of Cadet, Juvenile, Senior and Veteran 5000m).
