Ecologistas en Acción denounces the non-compliance of the Anti-Pollution Protocol by the Murcia City Council (14/02/2019)

Ecologists in Action has addressed the City of Murcia denouncing that the protocol was not activated measures to adopt during episodes of atmospheric pollution by nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone and particles (PM10), scheduled for episodes of contamination (BORM, nº 277, 11/30/2018), when last Friday 8 and Saturday 9 of February the maximum PM10 particle value set for its start-up was exceeded.

The atmospheric monitoring station located in the neighborhood of San Basilio, showed daily average values of 52 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate air in suspension PM10, and the municipal protocol forces to activate level 1 when the 50 are exceeded in a day or 45 three days in a row.

This activation involves the publication of specific messages on the traffic light panels at the entrances of the city to warn drivers of pollution.

Also, recommend that the center is not voluntarily accessed by car, that dissuasive car parks and drivers are used in an efficient manner.

It is recommended to reduce physical exercise and outdoor activities, move on foot, bicycle and public transport, turn off electrical appliances that are not used by using and lower the temperature of the heaters, among other recommendations.

Ecologists in Action demands that the anti-pollution protocol be complied with in an effective and objective manner and that compliance with this protocol or not be left to the discretion of municipal officials.

They consider it irresponsible that with this breach it is a matter of minimizing before the citizenship the importance and real consequences of the serious environmental and public health problem posed by air pollution linked to traffic and certain industries.

And especially when this is done from the administration that must act to reduce pollution and ensure that the constitutional right to breathe a healthy air that does not make us sick or we remain quality and life expectancy is met.

Ecologists urges the City of Murcia in coordination with the General Directorate of the Environment to truly face the problem of air pollution, mostly the result of excessive traffic of motor vehicles, and to take serious and effective measures, both in the prevention of This type of episodes, as in the measures to adopt to reduce the impact and duration of them.

As an example of measures to reduce and shorten episodes such as these days are the restriction of the most polluting vehicles to the urban environment, the gratuity of public transport and extension of their schedules, the express prohibition of any activity that supposes the increase in pollution such as agricultural burning, earth movements, etc.

The main ways of action to reduce air pollution in the medium and long term include: the reduction of motorized traffic, reducing the need for mobility with local urbanism and promoting public transport in cities (especially electricity) and non-motorized means such as bicycle or pedestrian traffic;

the ecological reconversion of interurban transport from the highway to an improved and socially accessible conventional railway;

savings and energy efficiency;

the recovery of stimuli for renewable electric generation, replacing thermoelectric power plants with fossil fuels;

and the widespread adoption of the best industrial techniques available for the reduction of air pollution.

In addition, the environmental organization is calling for an air quality improvement plan with quality objectives based on the limit values of the WHO guidelines and a specific tropospheric ozone control plan, with sufficient funding for its development and with preventive measures. , of information and citizen awareness.
