Nine out of ten students at the University of Murcia have an interest in improving their language level (13/12/2018)

The University of Murcia presented on Thursday the offer of the Language Service for the second semester.

The offer includes face-to-face courses in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish for foreigners, Portuguese, Russian and Japanese at different levels, from the initial A1 to the advanced C2 in the case of English.

In addition, preparation courses for official certification exams, conversation (English and Italian) and blended learning in English, German and Spanish are also taught.

Registration, which can be formalized through the website of the Language Service of the University of Murcia, will remain open until January 15.

During the presentation ceremony, María Senena Corbalán, vice-rector of Internationalization, explained that a voluntary survey has been carried out for 1700 students to know their level and accreditation in languages, whose results "will allow us to apply policies and concrete actions within our language training plan ".

From the data that the survey shows, it is worth noting that 95% of the students affirm that they are interested in improving their level of languages and, specifically, 85% express their desire to continue studying English.

The vice-rector pointed out that "this indicates that we have to make policies to encourage the students to continue accrediting, especially in the B2 level of English, which is one of the objectives that the rectoral team is marked for students who complete the degree" .

In addition, in relation to the interest expressed in international mobility programs, 52% of the students have expressed their desire to participate in them.

On the other hand, María Senena Corbalán has made a balance of the results obtained in the registrations of the Language Service during the first semester highlighting that "compared to the last course, there is a 40% total increase in the number of students" and that "In English, the percentage rises to 48%".

"Taking into account that it is data of a single quarter, it is very good figures," he said.

Juan Antonio Campillo, president of the Social Council of the UMU has indicated that "the knowledge of languages, especially English, is not only necessary to increase the employability of graduates, but also becomes essential for personal development."

In this regard, he affirmed that the Social Council shows a special sensitivity in that the employability of the graduates of the University of Murcia reaches the highest levels.

Finally, Rector Luján has been satisfied with the results obtained and has expressed the intention of the rector team to "strengthen the linguistic competences of students, PAS and PDI to improve their competitiveness in a world that demands these skills".

Among the students who answered the survey 'Know your level of languages', a draw was made of five tablets that have been delivered after the presentation of the courses and which have corresponded to: Verónica Rodríguez Garrido, Felipe Alconchel Gago, Paula Ibáñez Bernabé , Anais López Gómez and Lorena López Alacid.
