Social Rights granted more than 4,200 grants last year amounting to 3.2 million euros for rental and food expenses for families (16/07/2018)

The report presented today by Conchita Ruiz also indicates that 12 of every 100 families registered in the municipality received in 2017 the attention of social service professionals.

Spending by the City Council in 2017 on social policies amounted to € 27.5 million, with an increase of 9.2% and € 2.3 million compared to 2016. 4,898 people were able to remain in their usual environment thanks to four programs managed by the City Council : home help, telecare, family respite and meals at home.

The City Council of Murcia granted last year 4,267 grants amounting to 3.2 million euros to serve people or families who lack their own economic resources to meet their basic needs, especially food.

These are the most important aid, both in number and amount, but not the only ones.

In 2017, the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, led by Conchita Ruiz, also awarded 650 grants for the sum of 550,000 euros to help pay for the rental of houses and, in smaller amounts, but also existing ones, of the municipal coffers. they used funds to help with the payment of lodging, burials, home repairs, orthopedics, shock cleaning, glasses, electricity or water connections.

These are some of the data provided by Ruiz in the presentation of the memory of social services last year, which indicates that the total expenditure amounted to € 27.5 M, with an increase of 9.2% and € 2.3 M compared to 2016 .

First, people

"This is not just a balance of numbers and statistics, although it also has them.

But, in this case, what matters to us are the people and the data indicate the involvement of the City of Murcia with Murcia society in general, but especially with those who suffer situations of need or social risk.

For us it is very important that they know that they are not alone and that they have a wide network of municipal resources to cover their basic demands, "explained Ruiz.

The councilor of the area recalled that 'Murcia has a public network of social services fully consolidated and ready to support those who need it, whether through financial aid, prevention or training programs or providing educational, psychological, social or legal advice' .

In 2017, 12 of every 100 registered families were attended by the professionals of the Municipal Centers of Social Services (18,162 families), while 1,934 families received the Basic Insertion Income.

Educational reinforcement with 1,500 minors

Apart from benefits aimed at the entire population, a fundamental line of work developed by the municipal social services are the specific services for children and adolescents, among which the start-up for the first time of "Project 13- 17 ", in which 253 teenagers have participated.

As a measure of promotion and social integration, 1,470 minors received educational support, while 3,502 participated in socio-educational activities (PAIs, summer schools, cyber classrooms and other workshops).

4,898 users of programs to remain in their environment

On the other hand, supporting the autonomy of people to stay in their usual environment is another area of ​​preferential action for social services.

Thus, last year a new contract was signed to provide home help service to 1,694 people, while 2,854 people were users of the Telecare Service, 83 benefited from the Family Respite Service and 267 people had the service. of meals at home.

Regarding the care of people in situations of dependency, in the municipality of Murcia there are 11,488 who have a recognized degree of protection and 9,988 receive economic benefits or system services.

In 2017 progress was made in the development of the Municipal Universal Accessibility Plan, in which 59 non-governmental organizations have collaborated, and the first edition of "Easy Reading" documents was made to facilitate understanding and use by people with disabilities. cognitive or intellectual or with reading comprehension difficulties.

Greater assets and readers

The 76 older social centers continue to be an essential resource to promote active aging.

Thus, last year 3,389 members attended the training program that takes place in them, and 1,617 people participated in the program of gerontogimnasia.

The 16 Reading Clubs of the Department of Social Rights, which have been selected as examples of good practices, brought together more than 200 participants, mostly women.

Against social exclusion

To fight against poverty and social exclusion, with the participation of third sector entities (CEPAIM Foundation, RAIS Foundation, Jesus Abandoned Foundation, Fundación Secretariado Gitano, Cáritas Diocesana, Red Cross, Asociación Columbares and EAPN Región de Murcia representing the other associations), the following plans and projects were approved last year:

· Plan against energy and water poverty in the municipality, which includes measures aimed at the three axes that define it: the cost of energy, the housing conditions and the income of families.

· Project of social intervention with people who exercise begging.

· Preparation of measures aimed at alleviating child poverty, including the fact that in summer schools, 966 minors have received food aid, 440 scholarships for Social Services and 526 for social entities.

· The project for integral social intervention in the neighborhoods of Cabezos Collao and La Cruz in the hamlet of Cabezo de Torres.

In addition, the City last year expanded the contract with the Foundation Jesus Abandoned to provide 10 places a day of socio-health care to homeless people and began an experience of accommodation in single-person housing (houssing first) for homeless people, mental or physical illness who have been on the street for more than five years with difficulty in using shelters.

The SEMAS attended to 1,059 people and 277 social emergencies in afternoon, night, weekends and holidays.

Prevention of gender violence with young people

The services for the promotion of equality and attention to women victims of gender violence were directed to different areas.

On the one hand, 1,156 people attended the training program of the 74 women's centers and 234 enrolled in the "feminine plural" guided visits program.

On the other hand, the Department continued with the actions for the prevention of gender violence in 17 secondary and high school education institutes, with a participation of 1,248 students.

The Municipal Team for Attention to Gender Violence (EMAVI), served 288 women.
