Murcia now warns of the recklessness of the town hall and Councilman José Guillén for planting Californian poppies in Murcia (15/07/2018)

The Municipal Group Now Murcia denounces the plantation of Californian poppies in the gardens of Murcia, since this species appears in the Spanish catalog of invasive alien species.

Now Murcia points out the imprudence of the City of Murcia and the Councilor for Parks and Gardens in deciding the planting of this invasive species, to the detriment of the native varieties and the garden of Murcia.

The entity highlights the negative effects of this species, reflected by the Ministry of the Environment, and that vary from alterations in the structure and relative abundance of native or endemic species, and in the natural succession patterns of native vegetation, to reduction or alteration by space or resources.

NOW MURCIA warns of the recklessness of the City of Murcia and the Councilor for Parks and Gardens for planting Californian poppies in numerous gardens of Murcia, since according to the municipal group these poppies (Eschscholzia califórnica), also known as California Poppy, are included in the Spanish catalog of invasive alien species of the Ministry of the Environment, and the Spanish Government warns of its harmful effects on the territory where they are planted, since it also turns out to be a very difficult species to control as a hermaphrodite, and as the City Council indicates " they are replanted by themselves year after year, since they are implanted in the field ".

According to the Ministry, the impacts and threats of this species are so wide that they vary from effects in the habitat such as alterations in the structure and relative abundance of native or endemic species, and in the natural succession patterns of the native vegetation, effects on the other species such as establishment of competition, reduction or alteration by space or resources, and facilitate the development of other invasive species.

In the same sense Now Murcia reproaches the PP Government team, which has already started to plant this invasive species in the historic and protected Jardín de Floridablanca, which holds the status of Cultural Interest with the category of historic garden, or which is even more dangerous, in the delicate and emblematic Palmeral de Zaraiche in the middle of Murcia's orchard, also protected by the PGOU.

From now Murcia criticize the desire of the Popular Party in Murcia to look only for the photo and propaganda, and if the flowers that are planted are showy or not, without appearing to care that they are invasive and destructive of environmental values and the species of our earth.

In the same sense, the mayor of Now Murcia, Angeles Micol notes that: "we have already seen the total lack of control of the invasive species Rabo de Gato that was planted in gardens, flowerbeds and round of the municipality by the City Council, and that has been extended without any control by all the huerta, and especially by the North zone of Murcia ", also asks" What needs the Popular Party to understand the risks and the danger that supposes the plantation of exotic and invasive species in a so delicate area like Murcia, which is surrounded by kilometers of orchard very prone to the proliferation of these species, and that can suppose the destruction of our autochthonous varieties? ".

Now Murcia asks the municipal government to bet on native species of Murcia to decorate the green areas, using for example native aromatic plants such as rosemary, lavender, basil, etc., which also help to repel insects as annoying as mosquitoes.

Finally, the municipal party urges the councilman of Parks and Gardens, José Guillen, to reconsider, come to reason and order the immediate withdrawal of California poppies that have already been planted in Murcia, and claims that he desists to carry out more plantations of this variety, or any other invasive species.

Now Murcia stresses that the policy of urban gardening of this council and subcontractor, are chaotic and incomprehensible, and from the municipal training is urged once again to report the criteria and policies on parks and gardens that makes the City Council the capital.
